Field Notes

With its confident gait and its simple yet bold plumage, the American Oystercatcher is recognizable from any distance. Every summer I visit them at Nickerson Beach on Long Island where they can be found staging along with Terns and Black Skimmers. It is both relaxing and mesmerizing to watch them shuck shellfish in the receding surf.
