American Woodcock

Scolopax minor

Field Notes

You may not expect it, but every spring during their migration Woodcocks will fly to a park in the middle of New York City and rest there, some even staying multiple days! This is because their plumage perfectly camoflauges them amongst the ivy and dead leaves within the gardens of the park. I can confirm that trying to find them is difficult, so I usually just search for birders excitedly pointing their lenses to the ground.
