Cedar Waxwing

Bombycilla cedrorum

Field Notes

As their name suggests, these songbirds literally have wax growing out of their wings. While the exact purpose of this wax is unknown, we know that the color of the droplets is affected by the color of the fruit that they eat. These birds will sometimes even consume fermentated berries and get drunk! With their slicked-back appearance, occasional drunken debauchery, and tendancy to travel in large groups, I like to imagine Cedar Waxwings as little Greasers.
