Gray Catbird

Field Notes

Similar to their Mockingbird and Thrasher relatives, Gray Catbirds have the ability to mimic the calls of other birds. Their songs are often a mishmash of the calls of other birds, and can even last up ten minutes in duration. I fondly recall how one time in Central Park a fellow birder mentioned that they saw a Gray Catbird and a nearby little girl and her mom started laughing at the name.
